What can I put in a skip?
You can put pretty much anything except waste that’s toxic or, for environmental reasons, has to be disposed of in a particular way. The most common things that cannot go in a skip are:

What skip size should I order?
Skips come in a variety of sizes described in terms of cubic yards. A cubic yard is 1 yard (3 foot) high x 1 yard wide x 1 yard deep and is roughly the size of a standard washing machine or dishwasher. The most common skip you see in a residential street is called a builders skip and is either 6 or 8 cubic yards. The ideal skip size depends on not just the amount of waste you’re creating but also how much space you have to put the skip. The larger the skip, the cheaper it works out per cubic metre, but make sure you have enough waste to fill it, otherwise you’ll end up paying for thin air.
How quickly can a skip be delivered?
It all depends on how busy the skip hire company is and also whether you need to arrange a skip permit or parking bay suspension beforehand (see below). Assuming you don’t need a skip permit or parking suspension, allow at least a couple of days.
How long can I keep a skip for?
The usual skip hire period is for 1 week to 2 weeks but skip companies are usually quite flexible about when they collect if you give them enough notice.
What access does a skip lorry need?
If you intend to put a skip on your property rather than on the road, check with the skip company beforehand what access is required. Skip lorries are typically at least 8 ½ feet wide, with some as wide as 9 ½ feet. If you don’t have sufficient access, then the skip will need to be placed on the road and you will require a skip permit (see below).
How do I avoid using a ‘rogue trader’ skip hire company?
Check with the Environment Agency that the skip company you are using is licensed to carry waste. A licensed operator will have a waste carrier license number which, if you enter it on the EA site and, assuming it’s valid, will show you the company name. If a skip company in Sandwell isn’t happy providing you with a license number before you book or their license number doesn’t appear valid on the EA site – don’t use them. Also, it’s a good idea to ask for a copy of their public liability insurance cover just in case they damage your property when dropping off or collecting the skip.
How much should I expect to pay for skip hire in Sandwell?
Sandwell skip hire prices differ depending on the size of the skip you hire and also who you hire it from. As a rough guide in Sandwell you should expect to pay between £120 and £220 including VAT for a small to medium sized skip. A skip permit in Sandwell currently costs £27.00 for up to 28 days. If you need an extension, this will cost a further £16.00 for an additional 28 days. Residents and businesses cannot apply direct for a skip hire permit to Sandwell council. The skip hire company must apply on your behalf to Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, and will then add these extra fees to the skip hire price.
