What can I put in a skip?

You can put pretty much anything except waste that’s toxic or, for environmental reasons, has to be disposed of in a particular way. The most common things that cannot go in a skip are:

  • Paint & paint cans
  • Gas bottles
  • Asbestos
  • Electrical equipment (WEEE)
  • Tyres
  • TVs & computer screens
  • Fridges & freezers
  • Liquids
  • Oil, petrol, diesel
  • Batteries
  • Plasterboard
  • Hazardous & toxic materials
  • Clinical or medical waste
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Solvents

What skip size should I order?

Skips come in a variety of sizes described in terms of cubic yards. A cubic yard is 1 yard (3 foot) high x 1 yard wide x 1 yard deep and is roughly the size of a standard washing machine or dishwasher. The most common skip you see in a residential street is called a builders skip and is either 6 or 8 cubic yards. The ideal skip size depends on not just the amount of waste you’re creating but also how much space you have to put the skip. The larger the skip, the cheaper it works out per cubic metre, but make sure you have enough waste to fill it, otherwise you’ll end up paying for thin air.

How quickly can a skip be delivered?

It all depends on how busy the skip hire company is and also whether you need to arrange a skip permit or parking bay suspension beforehand (see below). Assuming you don’t need a skip permit or parking suspension, allow at least a couple of days.

How long can I keep a skip for?

The usual skip hire period is for 1 week to 2 weeks but skip companies are usually quite flexible about when they collect if you give them enough notice.

What access does a skip lorry need?

If you intend to put a skip on your property rather than on the road, check with the skip company beforehand what access is required. Skip lorries are typically at least 8 ½ feet wide, with some as wide as 9 ½ feet. If you don’t have sufficient access, then the skip will need to be placed on the road and you will require a skip permit (see below).

How do I avoid using a ‘rogue trader’ skip hire company?

Check with the Environment Agency that the skip company you are using is licensed to carry waste. A licensed operator will have a waste carrier license number which, if you enter it on the EA site and, assuming it’s valid, will show you the company name. If a skip company in Suffolk isn’t happy providing you with a license number before you book or their license number doesn’t appear valid on the EA site – don’t use them. Also, it’s a good idea to ask for a copy of their public liability insurance cover just in case they damage your property when dropping off or collecting the skip.

How much should I expect to pay for skip hire in Suffolk?

Suffolk skip hire prices differ depending on the size of the skip you hire and also who you hire it from. As a rough guide in Suffolk you should expect to pay between £120 and £220 including VAT for a small to medium sized skip. That price is before the cost of any skip permit or parking bay suspension (see below).

What does the skip hire price include?

The skip price covers delivery, collection and disposal. Labour is not included – so if you don’t fancy filling the skip yourself, you may want to consider a man & van rubbish clearance company like AnyJunk instead.

Can I put a skip in the road in Suffolk if I haven’t got space on my property?

Yes, but before putting a skip on a public highway in the Suffolk county Council, you’ll need to have a skip hire permit and, if it’s in a controlled parking zone (ie. on a single yellow line or in a residents parking or pay & display bay), you will also need a parking suspension. Both cost money and take time to arrange, typically at least a couple of days.

Suffolk skip permit price

A skip permit in Suffolk currently costs £25.45 for up to 28 days. If you need an extension, this will cost a further £25.00 for an additional 28 days. Residents and businesses cannot apply direct for a skip hire permit to Suffolk council. The skip hire company must apply on your behalf to Suffolk county Council, and will then add these extra fees to the skip hire price.

Alternative to Suffolk skip hire

If you don’t fancy doing all the loading yourself, haven’t got time to wait for a skip permit, or just want to save some money, then instead of hiring a skip you may like to consider using a licensed man & van rubbish clearance company like AnyJunk to remove your waste. Our crews clear your rubbish from anywhere on the premises, load it into a truck, and take it away for disposal. we also take many of the items that you cannot put in a skip, like fridges, tyres and TVs. Our rates – which are in line with Suffolk skip hire prices – include all labour and are based on the exact amount of waste we remove, so you don’t need to worry about correctly guessing the skip size required beforehand. No skip hire permits or parking suspensions are required and we also recycle more than 85% of everything we collect.

About Suffolk

Covering around 1467 square miles, Suffolk has a population of approximately 714,000. According to Wikipedia(1), it was part of the kingdom of East Anglia which was settled by the Angles in the 5th century AD. Suffolk was divided into separate Quarter Sessions divisions. These were originally four in number, reduced to two in 1860, the eastern division being administered from Ipswich and the western from Bury St Edmunds. The two divisions were made separate administrative counties as East Suffolk and West Suffolk under the Local Government Act 1888, with Ipswich becoming a county borough. A few Essex parishes were also added to Suffolk: Ballingdon-with-Brundon, and parts of Haverhill and Kedington.
